Graffiti on supports for bridge eradicated

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITERS

October 13, 2008

UPDATE 1: Joe Strusienski called last month about graffiti on supports for the West Mission Bay Drive bridge, visible from a bike path along the San Diego River.

THE SITE: West Mission Bay Drive bridge, San Diego
The supports are accessible only from the water, and the city lacks the proper equipment to access them, so street officials hired a private contractor for the work.

The scrawls were painted over last week, and Strusienski called back to thank the city for creating “a nice, pleasant bike ride again.”

WHO FIXED IT: Hasan Yousef, deputy director of the Street Division, who said the city is still brainstorming on ways to prevent a recurrence. The city's graffiti hotline is (619) 525-8522.

UPDATE 2: Work on widening a section of Jamacha Boulevard in Spring Valley has been stalled for years, and it's still unclear when it will begin.

As we wrote in March, a developer was obligated to widen the road and install water pipes as a condition for building hundreds of homes.

The county of San Diego continues working with developer Pointe Communities and the company that issued a surety bond that the developer would meet its obligations, said Derek Gade, the public-works manager for private development construction inspection.

Meanwhile, the Otay Water District is trying to determine whether the concrete pipes, exposed to the elements for years, are still guaranteed by their manufacturer.

Mark Watton, Otay's general manager, said the district won't take the pipes into its inventory unless they come with a full warranty.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Derek Gade, who can be reached at (858) 514-4673 or derek.gade@sdcounty.ca.gov.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Just Fix It might be able to help.
