Sign gone for now; bike path bump free

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

November 24, 2008

A look back at one of the first Just Fix It columns and one of the most recent.

IT'S FIXED 1: It looked as if gravity was winning a contest with a sign at one of the gateways to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.

THE SITE: The Rose Creek bicycle path, where bumps have been smoothed out and overgrown brush cleared.
The adobe monument at the Pacific Highway entrance to a parking lot that serves the Old Town transit center was leaning so much, Sylvia Steele was worried it would topple.

In a column published in March 2007, Bill Mennell, district services manager for the state park, assured that the sign was on “a very strong foundation.” Mennell said it needed to be shored up, a job he promised would be done this year as part of a wider park project.

Instead, the sign was demolished this month. Mennell said the park “decided it would be easier to knock it down and rebuild it” than to straighten it.

A new sign with a look “very similar” to the original monument should be up in a month or so, Mennell said.

IT'S FIXED 2: The Rose Creek bicycle path between Mission Bay Park and Pacific Beach had become an increasingly rough ride, with several spots in the pavement uplifted by the roots of nearby trees.

In an Oct. 22 column, the San Diego Park and Recreation Department promised to try to smooth out some of the bumps. The work has been done.

David Higgs, a cyclist who wrote in about the problem, said the route is much improved.

“The entire path is in much better overall shape now, and much more rideable” if not quite perfect, Higgs said. He also noticed that someone took the trouble to clear overgrown brush.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Just Fix It might be able to help.
