GPS devices being stolen, sheriff's deputies warn

UNION-TRIBUNE

7:29 a.m. November 19, 2008

IMPERIAL BEACH: Deputies are warning residents to beware of thieves stealing GPS devices from cars, trucks and sport utility vehicles.

Global positioning devices usually attach to the dashboard and help guide motorists to their destinations.

Since Oct. 1, seven of the devices have been stolen in car burglaries in Imperial Beach.

During the same period in cities and communities patrolled by deputies, 43 GPS devices have been stolen during vehicle burglaries, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Deputies are advising motorists to remove the devices when they leave their vehicles. Suspicious activity can be reported by calling the department's nonemergency number at (858) 565-5200. If a burglary or other crime is taking place, witnesses are urged to call 911. –M.A.
